The Texas Rangers believe Fernando Tatis Jr. should have been looking for a march instead of a Grand Slam in the eighth inning on Monday night.
Tatis Jr. came home in eighth place with his San Diego Padres 10-3 over the Rangers. After working a 3-0 count on Juan Nicasio, Tatis flipped on the fourth pitch and smashed the baseball over the right center wall for a 14-3 Padres lead.
The Rangers were apparently unhappy that they had given up on a grand slam. And unfortunate that Tatis, 21, had the courage to play this account with his team of seven. It was his 11th homerun of the season.
“I think there are a lot of unwritten rules that are constantly being challenged in today’s game,” Rangers manager Chris Woodward said in his post-match press conference. “Yeah, I didn’t like it, personally. You’re seven ahead in the eighth inning – usually not a good time to go 3-0. It’s kind of how we were all brought up in the game. But, like I said, the standards are challenged every day, so just because I don’t like it doesn’t. doesn’t mean it’s not fair. I don’t think we liked it as a group.
This dislike was clear after Tatis’ home run. Nicasio was replaced by Ian Gibaut and Gibaut immediately threw a pitch behind Manny Machado.
Tatis missed a sign of a hold?
Tatis has apparently been told he shouldn’t be swinging on that Nicasio pitch, but Rangers seem to believe Tatis didn’t need a sign of a grip not to swing.
“I’ve been in this game since I was a kid, and I know a lot of unwritten rules,” Tatis said. “But this time, I didn’t.
Padres manager Jayce Tingler after the game said that because the Padres racked up seven points at the time, Tatis actually received a sign to take that pitch.
“Just to make sure we get the signs 3-0 in this game,” Tingler said after the game of what he said to Tatis. “Just to make sure he’s young, with a free and focused mind and all that stuff and that’s the last thing we’ll ever take.” It’s a learning opportunity and that’s it and it will grow.
Tatis said Tingler told him the catch panel was on after he returned to the canoe.

The Grand Slam gave Tatis exclusive possession of the MLB home run lead after the Angels’ Mike Trout completed his 10th home run earlier in the evening. Tatis, who hit in seven runs on Monday night, also leads the MLB with 28 RBIs. Although the Rangers are certainly arguing with three of them. They would have much preferred Tatis to walk around driving a race.
