FFXIV Endwalker Reaper and Sage Detailed Gameplay

Final Fantasy XIVthe upcoming extension, Endwalker, will introduce two new jobs for FFXIV players to face: Reaper and Sage. The September 18, 2021 letter from the Producer Live Part LXVI broadcast event revealed more details on how these works will actually be played. Producer Naoki Yoshida was on hand to help explain some key concepts and abilities behind Jobs, based on a developing version of the game.

Both jobs were also featured in a FFXIV Endwalker Job Actions trailer played during the stream. (You can see Sage at 12:40 p.m. and Reaper at 4:25 p.m.)

FFXIV Endwalker Classes the Reaper as a melee DPS job, dealing damage at close range alongside the Dragon, Samurai, and Monk. As detailed in the original reveal, his primary weapon is a scythe. The Reaper is an original work for FFXIV, and is not based on any previous Final fantasy concept or character. Reapers do most of their work near enemies. They specialize in “pure melee” almost to the level of existing samurai work. Having said that, they do have abilities that can make gameplay improvements in combat. Reapers attack “in tandem” with an “avatar,” and have the ability to serve as a vessel for the avatar to enhance their own attacks for a period of time.

Here’s a presentation slide shown during the stream. It includes a preview of the unique HUD element for the Reaper.

The red soul gauge builds up as the player hits enemies. Players consume the soul gauge using skills that summon the avatar, which builds the blue shroud gauge. At certain levels of Shroud, the player can then host the Avatar. This causes the player to take on a new hooded appearance, like a classic grim reaper. Activating this mode also causes new elements to appear on the second HUD element. Like the other classes of FFXIV Endwalker, the Reaper will also have a “close-in” capability to allow it to travel great distances in combat. The Reaper, however, will allow him to move back and forth, with a visual effect similar to opening a portal. The Reaper game will involve elements of resource management on two gauges and will require some attention from players who want to get the most out of the job.

The Sage was the first new job announced for FFXIV Endwalker. It operates in a “barrier healer” style, like the existing Scholar Job. This means that he will recover the health of party members, but can also throw shields and other techniques to mitigate or block damage, preventing other players from getting hurt in the first place. Elders can attack enemies while healing the party at the same time. They have unique resources to fuel both their beneficial spells and their attack magic. Their weapons are the Nouliths, a new type of weapon that looks like a small group of magical drones. Their hovering qualities are reminiscent of the iconic “funnel” weapons of Mobile Suit Gundam. In a combat demonstration, the Noulith fired laser-like beams and projected force fields.

Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker will be available for pre-order customers on November 19, 2021. Other Final Fantasy XIV players will have access to it on November 23, 2021. It will launch on PS4, PS5 and PC. Check out the other changes to existing tasks summarized here.
