(Reuters) – Italian automaker Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV (FCA) has agreed to pay the automaker Tesla (NASDAQ 🙂 Inc. hundreds of millions of euros for Tesla's vehicles to be counted in its park so that 39, avoid fines for violation of new EU emissions rules, reported Sunday the Financial Times.

This measure will allow the Italian manufacturer to offset the carbon dioxide emissions from its cars compared to those of Tesla, by reducing its average figure to an authorized level, said the FT.

The report did not mention any other financial details regarding the specific amount Fiat Chrysler had agreed to pay Tesla.

The Italian manufacturer formed an open pool with Tesla on February 25, the report adds, citing a statement to the European Commission.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday. Fiat Chrysler did not directly address the amount it would pay, but added that it would "optimize the compliance options offered by the regulations".

"FCA is determined to reduce the emissions of all its products (…) .The purchasing pool offers the flexibility to deliver the products that our customers are willing to buy while respecting the cheapest approach." added FCA in a statement.
