“If you build it, it will come” has just taken on a whole new meaning. One week after Major League Baseball unveiled a newly constructed baseball stadium inspired by the years 1989 Field of dreams, a new television show based on this sporting fantasy the movie was announced from Good place and Desk writer Michel Schur. The series “will reinvent the mix of family, baseball, Iowa, and the magic that makes the film so enduring and so beloved, ”according to a press release. It was commissioned direct from the series and will be liand ten Universal’s streaming service, Peacock.

Field of dreams is an iconic Universal Film title from venerable producers Lawrence and Charles Gordon, which we could only have trusted Mike Schur, ”said Erin Underhill, President of Universal Television, in the Release. “His talent, his love for baseball, and his respect for his themes make him the perfect choice to revisit this beloved film that evokes nostalgia and visceral emotion in so many of its fans.

Written and directed by Phil Alden Robinson and based on the 1982 novel Joe without shoes by WP Kinsella, Field of Dreams stars Kevin Costner as Ray, an Iowa farmer who hears one day a mysterious voice saying “If you build it, it will come. Ray realizes the “it” is a baseball field, so he spends all his family’s food silver in the construction of a baseball field where the ghosts of legendary baseball players begin to appear. Although he did not win any of the three Oscars for which he was nominated (best picture, adapted screenplay, and score), Field of dreams has become one of the most iconic (and heartbreaking) sports movies of all time. It co-stars Ray Liotta, James Earl Jones and Amy Madigan, among others.

The movie endured so much that, as previously mentioned, Major League Baseball built a field next to the filming location and hosted a game there last week. Filled with references to the film, the show was the highest-regular season ranked baseball game in nearly 20 years. “Over the years, Field of dreams has remained a fan favorite, retaining its rightful place in the times, ”said Lisa Katz, president of NBCUniversal television and streaming. “It’s whimsical and grounded, a space where Mike Schur excels, and we can’t wait to bring a new take on this classic to Peacock.”

How Schur will capture the magic of the film in an expanded TV format is, of course, the bigger question. But trying to reinterpret a film as famous as Field of dreams is not something that a person with a resume as impressive as Schur will approach slightly. What do you think of this new Field of dreams project?
