Square Enix changed the icon of Work Sage in Final Fantasy XIV after learning that some players had expressed concerns about trypophobia.

Trypophobia is aversion, fear or loathing of irregular or patterned clumps of holes, bumps, etc. The original Sage work icon had three holes grouped together which made some uncomfortable and now those holes are no longer present in the icon.

“When we posted new details for Sage and Reaper on the special site, we also included their icons, not thinking that these were particularly significant reveals,” said Naoki Yoshida, producer and director of FFXIV, in a new blog post. “However, we quickly received feedback from players around the world, who told us that the Sage icon made them uncomfortable or fearful.”

Yoshida explained that the severity of the reaction to trypophobia varies from person to person, and just because an image like the Sage icon does not cause someone to have trypophobia that it affects. that of another.

“But regardless of those differences, you’ve given us your heartfelt feedback, and there’s still time to make a difference,” Yoshida continues in the blog post. “Also considering the fact that job icons are clearly visible in-game and also appear on merchandise, we’ve made the decision to redesign the wise icon.”

The original icon was largely the same as the new icon above, but the three pillar-shaped symbols each had a hole. You can check it out in a side-by-side comparison with the new one at this Reddit link if you’re curious about the change. Yoshida said the design concept behind the icon, however, remains unchanged.

“The design concept is unchanged, the icon being based on the four nouliths that form the sage’s armament,” Yoshida said. “The holes in the original design were added for detail, but they ended up appearing as a group. To solve the problem, the new icon reduces the holes while accentuating the design concept.”

Yoshida said the team expects inevitable comparisons, with some players perhaps preferring the original icon, but the team thinks designs like this new Sage icon are designs that grow on players. while they play work.
