Final Fantasy 14 has seen an influx of new players over the past few weeks, causing Square Enix to withdraw the amount of digital codes available on the official site.

These last weeks FFXIV has seen a surge in popularity, as streamers flock to the MMO and gamers begin their adventures leading up to the game this fall Endwalker expansion. In doing so, it pushed the MMO to a new high of popularity among gamers, to the point that Redditors pointed out (via PCGamesN) that even Square Enix has seen its digital game supply run out.

Digital copies aren’t supposed to run out – that’s one of the perks of the digital age of gaming we’re in, but gamers have noticed on the Square Enix store that there is a list of ‘waiting for a digital version of the MMO on the PC and PlayStation 4 versions for the full edition (which includes the base game plus all expansions so far). However, it still looks like you can buy the MMO on Steam.

One reason for this limitation could be to slow down the number of mixed accounts in game worlds. The editors pointed out that there is no room for new Sprouts (as new players are called in). Final Fantasy 14) on North American servers.

As of this morning, the official Square Enix store still has the Full Edition on a waiting list, which means if you’re anxious to potentially jump into Steam, this is the way to go – although the people on every server can prevent you from creating your new Sprout right away.

Final Fantasy 14 is riding this wave of popularity in part because of the notoriety World of warcraft players leaving the latter for the former, including Asmongold, one of the most popular Warcraft streamers on Twitch. Recently, his stream had hundreds of thousands of viewers, although he had to struggle with people sniping him during his first stream.

It will be interesting to see if Square Enix can continue to ride this wave of popularity, as well as how long it will last. As Final Fantasy 14 getting ready for the Endwalker Expansion coming in November, there’s plenty of time for the new Sprouts to jump in and learn the ropes of the popular MMO before the new storyline.
