Final Fantasy 14 is so popular that Square Enix … has stopped selling it

Digital copies of Final Fantasy 14: Online Complete Edition have been temporarily suspended according to online reports and verified by IGN. While sales have since picked up for Final Fantasy 14, the hiatus may have been caused by the MMORPG’s growing popularity.

Over the weekend, social media users reported that the Square Enix Store listing for digital PC copies of Final Fantasy 14: Online was greyed out and replaced with a “Wait List” button. Final Fantasy 14 was still under “Waiting List” when IGN checked the store list this morning, although digital sales have since picked up.

Many have speculated that the break in digital sales was a result of the popularity of Final Fantasy 14. And indeed, there is some credibility to this theory.

Like other MMOs, Final Fantasy 14 has multiple servers, and the most popular servers are often crowded, preventing new players from immediately creating new characters. This doesn’t mean that the servers are full, but that they are at full capacity right now and players can wait for less busy times to join.

Last night every server would have been crowded, meaning any new player hoping to join a server would be unable to do so. IGN has contacted Square Enix for more details on the situation, but they declined to comment.

If congestion was indeed the case, then suspending digital sales for Final Fantasy 14 makes sense. New players wouldn’t be able to get started immediately after downloading their brand new copy of FF14, even if they wanted to.

Suspending digital game sales may have been a way to prevent players from logging into Final Fantasy 14 for the first time, but being denied due to server capacity.

According to Square Enix’s own server status page, the congestion has eased and many of the data center’s most popular servers are back on line. Perhaps this is why digital sales of Final Fantasy 14 have picked up.

But whether this is the result of popularity or a technical problem is not clear. Final Fantasy 14 had a banner year breaking its Simultaneous Player record on Steam and once again increasing its total number of registered players. Popular streamers have also started creating content around Square Enix’s MMORPG.

It’s also a boom year as Final Fantasy 14 often sees an influx of players ahead of a new expansion and Square Enix recently announced that Endwalker will be released on November 19. Check out IGN’s massive interview with FF14 director Naoki Yoshida for more information.
