Final Fantasy 14 servers struggle under demand, Square Enix responds

Final Fantasy 14 is currently in the spotlight, thanks to both the upcoming expansion Endwalker and a wave of big name streamers picking up the MMO. It’s bad enough of a problem that producer and director Naoki Yoshida posted a note on server congestion on Tuesday, along with fixes like a timer that starts the game’s AFK players after 30 minutes.

“Recently, we have seen a record number of users in all regions, with a large amount of new players starting their adventures,” said Yoshida. “In particular, the increase in the number of actors from the NA and EU regions over the past two weeks has been both so amazing and unexpected that many players are now having difficulty logging in or creating new characters due to server congestion, and we sincerely apologize for that.

Fortunately, there is a backup on the way. The North American data centers that support the game were recently upgraded, which allowed Square Enix to increase the maximum number of simultaneous connections to 18,000, or 750 per global server. A similar upgrade is planned for European data centers “in the immediate future,” and Square Enix is ​​working to optimize existing servers as much as possible, Yoshida said.

Even with these improvements, North American global servers “experienced six to seven hour periods at full connection capacity” last weekend, Yoshida said. “As a result, character creation was unavailable for long periods of time, and players faced average connection wait times of 10-20 minutes. For players residing at Worlds in the European Data Center, weekend connection wait times could be as high as 40 minutes.

In an effort to lighten the lines, Yoshida politely asked players to log out if they intended to be inactive, so new players could come in and create their brand new characters. In addition, the auto-disconnect feature, which starts players after a long period of inactivity, is back. It usually pops up when launching a new expansion, but demand is so high right now that Square Enix is ​​rolling out it early.

It’s understandable that Final fantasy 14 struggles under demand; the game attracted a lot of attention and stares. Square Enix is ​​still working on logistics to meet demand, especially with COVID security concerns limiting travel. However, it’s still very cool to see an older game come back into the limelight.
