The Final Fantasy 16 producer provided a small development update during a Tokyo Game Show stream this weekend and claimed that Square Enix is currently putting the finishing touches on the PS5 RPG.

Speaking on a TGS live stream on Saturday, Naoki Yoshida reiterated that the main design for Final Fantasy 16 is complete and claimed that the development team is currently finalizing the remaining side quests that are expected to appear in the game.

Yoshida said that the character models for the game are also nearing completion and there are only a few quality improvements to be made to the game.

The Square Enix producer previously said the company wanted to show FF16 at TGS, but the game development team couldn’t meet the deadline.

Final Fantasy 16 does not yet have an official release date. However, Square Enix has suggested that development for the game has been at an advanced stage since its announcement a year ago.

In October 2020, the Final Fantasy 16 recruiting page stated, “We have already completed basic development and storyline production, and continue to create large-scale resources and build boss fights while expanding our various development tools. “

Square Enix officially announced the new Final Fantasy installment during a PS5 showcase in September 2020.

While no release date has been confirmed, the reveal featured nearly four minutes of footage from various aspects of the title, suggesting it was in development.

Final Fantasy 16 is directed by Hiroshi Takai, the designer who played the same role for Final Fantasy XIV and The Last Remnant.

“Although we dedicate our hearts and souls to this project every day, it may still be some time before we can get it into your hands,” he said in September. “However, I promise you it will be worth the wait!”

The trailer for Final Fantasy 16 originally referred to a PC version, although that was eventually dropped. Asked to clarify the situation, Square Enix later said, “We don’t have more information on the release of FF16 on platforms other than the PS5.”
