With improved artwork, gameplay improvements, and more.

Square Enix’s Final Fantasy pixel remaster series continues on September 8 with the arrival of Final Fantasy 4 on Steam and mobile devices.

“In Final Fantasy 4,” Square explains, “Baron’s Kingdom sends its fleet of elite airships, the Red Wings, to attack the surrounding countries. Distressed by his mission, Cecil, a dark knight and captain of the Red Wings, decides to fight the tyrannical Baron with his loyal friend and lover by his side. “

Final Fantasy 4’s pixel remaster follows similar builds for the first three games, bringing an updated 2D pixel character and background, revamped soundtrack (overseen by original composer Nobuo Uematsu), gameplay improved and a range of quality of life additions.

On the gameplay front, there’s an auto-combat option, updated controller support, and a modernized user interface, and these quality-of-life improvements include the ability to save at any time. Finally, to complete the updated package, additional extras, including a bestiary, an art gallery and a music player.

Square’s 4-pixel Final Fantasy remaster will retail for £ 12.99 for Steam on September 8 (mobile versions will likely be a bit more expensive judging from previous versions), and pre-buyers will receive three specially rearranged music tracks – The Red Wings (Timelapse Remix), Final Fantasy 4 (Timelapse Remix) and Battle 2 (Timelapse Remix) Main Theme – plus two limited wallpapers and a 20% discount.

There’s also a special bundle available on Steam, giving players access to all currently released Final Fantasy pixel remasters, as well as installments 5 and 6 when they arrive at a later date.
