Nobuo Uematsu has a long history in video games that any songwriter would be proud of. Having worked on most Final fantasy games to some extent it has covered a wide range of RPG hits like the trigger of a stopwatch, Lost odyssey and The last story.
Recently, he’s collaborating again with Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, working on an Apple Arcade exclusive. Fantastic to create an orchestrated 60-piece soundtrack.
Speaking to Mobile Syrup for an interview, Sakaguchi revealed that it may be Uematsu’s last fully branded game, saying:
Before approaching him to work on Fantasian, he was going through some health issues, and we wondered if he was going to be able to put everything together or if it was even possible for him to work on it.
I think he kind of hinted that Fantasian might be the last game he makes through and through to score an entire soundtrack.
Uematsu never revealed what illness he was suffering from, confirming in September 2018 that he was taking the rest of 2018 to recover. Since then he has composed individual pieces like Final Fantasy VII remake main theme, so that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll retire just yet.
Turning on a more positive note, Sakaguchi confirmed that Uematsu had given everything for Fantasian. Speaking further on the soundtrack, he said the songwriter “poured his heart and soul” into the game, revealing that he “almost made me cry a little bit”.
It’s just a shame that Fantasian isn’t coming to Switch (at the time of writing, at least), because we’d love to see what these two legendary characters have put together for this upcoming RPG. Whatever happens in his career, we will pray for the health and success of Nobuo Uematsu.
