The Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters launched today, bringing versions of early Final Fantasy games to PC that we ultimately hoped were prettier than the not-so-pretty mobile ports we’ve been treated to in the past. They’re prettier, indeed, and even have new music, but all of that has been slightly overshadowed by the downright awful UI font choice. Fortunately, fans are working fast, and there are already instructions for “fixing” the remastered pixel fonts just hours after launch.
Lots of other people gave a good side on the Pixel Remaster font, so I won’t blame you too much. The bottom line is that it’s pretty condensed, which makes it hard to read, and not really stylistically consistent with a pixel remaster. It’s a strange choice.
The important part is that people are already sharing details of how to redeem it. You can snag the details of the slightly tedious but totally doable process on the RPG site. They show you how to swap the rather condensed default font for a much larger, more readable version. Thank God. My old sad eyes can’t stand all this little text.
This solution doesn’t really solve the fact that the chosen font doesn’t have quite the retro vibe, but it’s a PC version, right? I would say it takes another 12 hours and there may still be mods to fully swap the font with a new font.
Police blunders aside, the Pixel Remasters appear to be an improvement overall. They feature redesigned pixel art for characters and backgrounds, new soundtrack arrangements overseen by original composer Nobuo Uematsu, and modern conveniences like automatic combat and a bestiary.
“The vast majority of the game’s graphics have been redesigned in an updated 2D pixel art style,” Square Enix said. “The playable characters, in particular, have been redesigned by Shibuya Kazuko, the same staff who has drawn our character sprites since the start of the series. Graphics so that they display clearly on modern high-resolution screens.”
