Final Fantasy XIV is so popular that even the digital version has sold out

Final Fantasy XIV, the popular MMO on trying find an apartment in San Francisco is flying off the shelves – digitally. Right now, when you go to the Square Enix store, you will likely run into an obstacle while trying to purchase a download code for the game.

During the night, the players on Reddit and the games forum Reset Era note that Final Fantasy XIV Complete Edition—A bundle that includes the base game alongside its expansions — could not be purchased from its publisher’s owner store. Indeed, at the present time, you cannot buy a computer or Playstation 4 download the game code from the Square Enix website; trying to do this lists a “waitlist” button in place of the typical “add to cart” option. (You can currently buy Final Fantasy XIV Complete Edition no problem for Mac. You can also add it to your cart on Steam and the PlayStation Store.)

It’s strange, isn’t it? You would think that a game would only be out of stock due to physical limitations – discs, packaging and other products depending on increasingly rare raw materials. The code, after all, is endless. So these limitations probably have something to do with player capacity, as a sudden influx of players wouldn’t be really great on servers. (Square Enix representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.)

Final Fantasy XIV, although generally popular, is currently experiencing an influx of gamers. Earlier this month, the PCGamesN site Noted this FFXIV broke its all-time record for simultaneous players on Steam. Currently, more than 22 million accounts are registered with the game, according to figures from Square Enix. It makes sense that the company wants to artificially limit a new player base, at least a little.

But Square clearly doesn’t want to limit players too much. In a press release this morning, Square Enix announced “the longest free login campaign” before the Endwalker expansion, proposing to waive subscription fees for 14 days for returning players. This offer ends August 23.
