Final Fantasy XIV Summer Sale

Square Enix announced a summer sale for MMOs Final Fantasy XIV; with Shadowbringer and the full edition being at 60% off.

While the sale has only been announced for Japan at the time of writing, it should be noted that the sale also applies to North America and Europe. The 60% discount applies to the Shadowbringer the enlargement, the Shadowbringer Collector’s Edition, and the Complete edition (including both Stormblood and Shadowbringer extensions).

The sale will last until August 18 in Japan, but the West Square Enix stores are making no distinction as to when their sales will end. Western PlayStation Stores note sale ends August 19 [US: 1, 2, 3] [Europe: 1, 2, 3].

Western Final Fantasy XIV Twitter account made announce a different kind of sale, for the in-game premium merchandise store. Along with the introduction of Oracle’s Hold and Consideration emote, there is also a multi-item sale through August 13th.

The latter includes the Eureka emote and two items related to the recent Make it Rain and Gold Saucer campaign. These are the Senor Sabotender emote (to dance like the Gold Saucer mascot) and the Authentic Senor Sabotender Trophy for your accommodation. There are also discounts on progression skippers; level a job to 70 or complete the first two extensions.

While it’s surprising to see the game’s sale and expansion unannounced, one possible reason could be that Square Enix is reluctant to another wave of gamers. Final Fantasy XIV has recently seen renewed interest; all being attributed to one man. The game recently broke its Steam simultaneous player record with over 47,000; after World of warcraft streamer Asmongold has tried the game.

His first two streams and subsequent VODs reached 2.7 million and 2.1 million views. The game briefly had to deal with full western servers and had to put together a waitlist for the full edition.

MMO Population – using API tools, Reddit, and other resources to calculate the number of players and active players – proposed that Final Fantasy XIV has approximately 2.49 million active players. This would be 30,000 more than their estimate for World of warcraft (assuming both digits are correct).

Officially, Final Fantasy XIV reached over 22 million registered players worldwide in April 2021. This would also include players who signed up for the game’s free trial. Nonetheless, that number has surely increased since Asmongold took its first steps in Eorzea.

Square Enix recently launched the benchmark for the Endwalker expansion. This allows players not only to test the game’s proper functioning on their PC, but also to use the in-game character creator. This will give players a little taste of the upcoming Male Viera race.

The Make it Rain campaign is also underway, granting more MGP from Gold Saucer minigames. This is also sure to see an influx of players. This writer has also experienced a shift with a European world in the Gold Saucer and a large number of players crowding around NPCs offering quests and services. This image here only indicates half of the players who surrounded this limited-time quest NPC in its prime.

Final Fantasy XIV is available on Windows PC (via the OS Store and Steam), PlayStation 4 and soon on PlayStation 5 and Xbox One. A free trial is available, including the base game and the first expansion with some limitations. In case you missed it, you can find our Shadowbringer review of the extension here (we can’t recommend it enough!)

The next expansion; Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker, launch on November 23.
