During a live broadcast of the Tokyo Game Show, Naoki Yoshida and Hironobu Sakaguchi spoke about Final Fantasy XVI offering a little development update.
You may know Naoki Yoshida as the director and producer of Final Fantasy XIV and producer of XVI. Hironobu Sakaguchi is currently the head of Mistwalker (which recently released Fantasian) and is widely recognized as the father of the Final Fantasy series.
Sakaguchi-san mentioned that he thinks Final Fantasy XVI is going to be a fantasy in its own right, and Yoshida-san has confirmed that the main storyline is over.
The side quests are in development and almost complete. The character models are also nearing completion and the team just needs to improve the quality a bit.
Yoshida-san went on to mention that the initial goal was to produce the main storyline with a small team. Although the total production period is quite long, the size of the team did not increase much until the plans were finalized. There was a lot of trial and error. Yoshida-san thinks it’s important to start with a small team and then grow gradually.
Sakaguchi-san (maybe jokingly) offered to write a quest for the game, and Yoshida-san mentioned that he could write for Final Fantasy XIV, but Final Fantasy’s dad replied that he wouldn’t. not compete with Yasumi Matsuno (who gave her 1 million gil to get started in XIV) and Yoko Taro.
Final Fantasy XVI will be released on PS5 and PC. No publish windows were shared and the PS5 console exclusivity was explicitly described as temporary.
