The NFL season is still in a week, but college football is already back. The Redskins are a team with needs in the field. If they want to find future help, they should be on the lookout Saturday to find their next star players.
The glory of college football is finally back with a slate loaded for the weekend. Even if you prefer the pros to the splendor and marvelous madness of college sports, there's plenty to see and future Sunday stars head to the field on Saturday.
In week 1, all eyes are turning to Dallas, where Oregon and Auburn will meet in what I declare the game of the week.
Here are the players that Redskins fans should watch, as they could be good targets to bring out Burgundy and gold next season.
DL Nick Coe, Auburn
You can never have enough sharp in the NFL. Coe has totaled seven sacks, 27 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles in 2018. He is very fast and disruptive in the backfield. The question about him, however, is whether he is as good as he looks or if his teammate allows him to.
Brown is the focal point of the Auburn line of defense and is a force to be reckoned with inside. Offensive lines are forced to focus on him, leaving plenty of room for Coe to wreak havoc.
Coe may not be the type of star hunter that a team can build and may need this dominant help inside. This is what makes it go from an early choice in the first round to a first late, second round.
But hey, the Redskins have Da'ron Payen inside, which could certainly be a dangerous tandem for the NFL.
OT Prince Tega Wanogho, Auburn
This guy should be written simply by name.
In case you do not know it and if you do not know it, you probably work for the Redskins, Trent Williams' stay in Washington is probably over. The tackle left is a pretty important position in football, especially for a team with a rookie quarter who, he hopes, can become the face of the franchise. You must find a way to protect it.
Wanogho is the starting tackle left at Auburn. Former athlete of basketball, his athleticism is not unanimous. Coming from Nigeria, however, football is still pretty new to him and he is a very raw prospect. It will be a great year to determine his future in the NFL. If he dominates, that's someone who could absolutely be a good choice as the NFL's left tackle. If not, it may be more of a project that would be problematic for the Redskins as they need someone who could start right next season.
LB Troy Dye, Oregon
Dye is about to be among the top linebackers in the 2020 class. By 2018, he had 115 tackles, eight loss tackles, two sacks and one interception. It would have been a midfielder choice last year, but he has chosen to return for his senior season and is now entering the selection for the second round, perhaps even late in the first round.
The dye is very athletic and could potentially be strong in passing cover. However, he seems to miss a lot of noise behind his hits, and you have to wonder how he's going to handle an NFL running back behind him.
OT Calvin Throckmorton, Oregon
Throckmorton has been on the entire offensive line for Oregon, playing left, right, center and on guard. It is perceived as a tackle in the first half of the project. Returning for his senior season was a good choice for him, as it would allow him to refine his technique – which was a small suspect – for another year before becoming a professional. One day, he will be a good player in the NFL, but probably not at the level of a Trent Williams.
OL Shane Lemieux, Oregon
The Redskins offensive line could have a lot of new faces next year with Brandon Scherff for the final year of his rookie contract. Lemieux could be a potential replacement. Saturday's game marks his 39th consecutive start with the Ducks in the guard. He is a balanced player who is good at once in block and in pass. No one will take it in fifth place as the Redskins have done in Scherff, but he is still considered one of the best goalkeepers of the project.
I'd like to not mention the two biggest potential names in the game. Justin Herbert's quarterback for Oregon and Derrick Brown's defensive lineman for Auburn will be the first two picks in the repechage. With Dwayne Haskins and Da'ron Payne, the Redskins will not really be on the market for a quarterback or a domestic lineman.
