The Cleveland Cavaliers improve their record to 9-9 after a strong second half. They got a 122-107 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night in Cleveland.
The first half was extremely sloppy for the Cavs, but they came out with a different energy in the second half. They reduced turnover and increased defense. They forced the Pistons to shoot 45 percent from the field and forced 22 turnovers.
Darius Garland was back in the starting lineup for the first game since January 2. Garland looked rusty and not quite healthy the last three games, in which he came off the bench. This was not the case tonight, as he collected 14 points on 6-11 from the field, to go with four assists. He looked extremely confident and managed to shoot throughout the game.
Collin Sexton never seems to get bored and puts constant pressure on the defense. He led the team with 29 points, on a very efficient 10-14. He also threw five rebounds and five assists.
Cavs head coach JB Bickerstaff staggers Sexton and Garland’s minutes throughout the game, and that seems like the best course of action. They can each orchestrate the offense while surrounded by shooters and a shot blocker.
André Drummond faced his old team, and he struggled for the first three quarters, but when the fourth came he was locked up. He had a double-double with 23 points and 16 rebounds and was effective in defense. with five flights.
The newcomers continue to make their presence felt and provide a much needed spark on the bench. Taurean Prince had a full game with 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists. While Jarrett Allen protected the rim all night and finished with 10 points and two blocks. The Pistons didn’t challenge Allen to the rim nearly as much as they did with Drummond.
