The San Francisco Giants won a blowout against the Chicago Cubs today, 15-4. They have won six straight wins, tying their season high, and have yet to be defeated on this road trip.
The Cubs took an early lead against Kevin Gausman, scoring a run in the first. But Tommy La Stella and captain, aka Brandon Belt, fought back with a five-point second inning fueled by a two-point single from La Stella, followed by a three-point home run from Belt.
La Stella and Belt were a lethal one-two combo leading the order today, with La Stella going 3-for-6, scoring three runs and hitting five, and Belt going 2-for-4, scoring two runs. and strike in three.
Now I know that we as Giants fans have been spoiled in the home run number category of a season in the past, thanks to just one Barry Bonds. But Belt’s home run today gives him the most home runs hit by a Giants player since 2013, when Hunter Pence hit 27.
Despite a grueling pace of play, Gausman contested six innings, allowing eight hits, three runs, no walks and nine strikeouts. With those nine strikeouts, Gausman has now not only surpassed his previous season high of 179 from 2017, but he’s topped 200.
But navigation has not necessarily been smooth today. At the end of the third, Ian Happ hit a ball in the middle of the field, which Mike Yastrzemski lost in the sun, the wind or the ivy. Who can tell, really. But it turned what should have been an end of a round into a two-round rally for Chicago.
Things got a little ugly at the end of the fourth as well. Jason Heyward survived two challenges to reach and hold first base, after a very close selection attempt was called off. Gausman had the next two batters out on strikes, but that’s when things changed. David Bote hit a single to Brandon Crawford, who attempted to jump over a slippery Heyward, but hit his knee in Heyward’s jaw.
It was a scary scene, as Heyward was on the ground for a while, assisted by coaches. He was able to get up, with some help, but left the game looking quite disoriented. We certainly hope he will be okay. It’s absolutely the last thing you want to see in any game, let alone a game that isn’t exactly competitive.
Caleb Baragar came in in the seventh and finished the game with a three innings stoppage, allowing three hits, one run (in the ninth, to relief pitcher Scott Effross, who had to defend himself because the Cubs had no one left. on the bench) and a step. It was the only march issued by the Giants today.
The same could certainly not be said of the Cubs. The steps tormented the Cubs pitchers, just as the pace of this game tormented Rob Manfred. They walked 11 hitters. They walked in two descents. They walked with everyone except Tommy La Stella. They will accompany people in their dreams tonight.
Manuel RodrÃguez threw in the fifth and did not register a takedown, marching three, including a march towards Evan Longoria with the bases loaded. He was ultimately scored for five runs in the Giants’ explosive six-run fifth inning, which featured a two-run single from Mike Yastrzemski and a three-run homer to La Stella.
Rex Brothers did slightly better, scoring just two runs, but had four of the five batters he faced in the eighth inning. Thairo Estrada walked into Belt for an RBI and Longoria got a ball to score Curt Casali for the Giants’ final races of the day.
The high scoring affair saw the Giants take out Crawford and Kris Bryant early, as they both suffered from wrist pain, and Buster Posey, who will be resting more with Casali from probably tomorrow.
The Giants hope to close the series tomorrow with another sweep and an undefeated road trip.
