For six innings, it looked like the Mets were heading for a win. But baseball is a nine-innings game, and the Marlins came back and handed the Mets another demoralizing loss, as New York fell 3-2 at LoanDepot Park.
For the first two-thirds of this match, Javier Báez and Marcus Stroman were history. At home plate, Báez scored a ground rule double in the first, came in third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch as Michael Conforto walked on. In the third, he hit a titanic blast that stalled to give the Mets a two-point lead. In the fifth, he walked and stole two goals, although he was blocked in the third.
On the mound, Stroman was masterful, with 6.1 innings, allowing an earned run on four walks without a walk and seven strikeouts to lower his ERA to 2.87. He allowed a run in the sixth and came out with a strikeout in the seventh with his club ahead by one. Luis Rojas called on Brad Hand, who did not have mastery of his pitch in this one. In the end, it was a wandering throw on a ground ball that passed Pete Alonso and allowed Miami to tackle the run tied for seventh.
The Marlins took the lead in earnest on a massive Chisholm Jazz circuit in the eighth round against Jeurys Familia. The Mets retired to suffer their second straight loss in the ninth and seventh in ten games in Miami in 2021.
