As California continues to bake amid a heatwave, PG&E said on Tuesday rotating power outages are “likely” this afternoon and evening.
The utility company encouraged people to save electricity between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. and said power outages could last for up to two hours. (Find energy saving tips on SFGATE.)
If the California Independent System Operator (ISO), which oversees the state’s electricity grid, orders outages today, customers can look up their address to determine if their home will be affected. Visit www.pge.com/rotatingoutages.
If your address is programmed for a failure, the tool will give you a block number for a specific time of failure.
Temperatures are expected to be warmer on Tuesday compared to Monday as indoor temperatures soar into the hundreds by Tuesday afternoon. With little expected relief from the overnight heat, PG&E expects demand for electricity to increase throughout the day.

ISO issued a Level 3 emergency over the weekend because demand for electricity exceeded supply. Outages caused by the Stage 3 emergency are different from public safety power outages issued when the risk of forest fires is high.
Gov. Gavin Newsom said on Monday that the supply shortages are only expected to worsen over the next few days.
“On Saturday, we did not meet the needs of around 450 megawatts, and we expect significantly larger needs today,” Newsom said at a press conference on Monday. “Today we expect to run out of 4,440 megawatts.
Because the state expects even larger gaps in supply and demand, the governor said residents should prepare for blackouts. He called the inability to “predict and plan” these energy shortages “simply unacceptable”.
PG&E said the blackouts could continue until Thursday depending on how the heat wave progresses.
