NXT Champion Finn Balor was a guest of WWE After the bell Podcast with Corey Graves where he discussed his transition from WWE’s main roster to NXT.
Balor was recruited to RAW in 2016, nabbed Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins within two months. Balor’s victory over Rollins saw him become the first WWE Universal Champion to Slam summer this year. Balor’s time on the main roster can be seen as very disappointing, as he suffered a shoulder injury the night he first won the Universal Championship and he mostly stayed out of the title picture. world after his return.
Fast forward to the end of 2019, Balor returned to NXT where he began his WWE career and regained the NXT title he last held in 2015. Balor spoke about the initial plan for him to do so. ‘to be sent to NXT as a trial period that turned into a long-term role. He said he didn’t know what to expect, but was happy to be back and that he had no plans to return to the main roster anytime soon.
“I didn’t know what to expect,” Balor said. “I kinda felt like it was going to be a 3 month contract. Restart Finn, reset and go back to RAW or go back to SmackDown, go back to normal.
“It kind of became something that nobody expected. I think it’s because of how NXT is also and really really evolving its own brand now. I don’t know what to expect for the future, I don’t know how long this will last but I have to say I’m super happy in NXT and there’s no reason I want to evolve somewhere in my career at this point. “
Balor continued to talk about the fact that he has continued to evolve over the years. He noted that there may soon be a time when NXT no longer needs Finn Balor and needs to move on, but now is not the time.
“I feel like I’m still growing,” Balor said. “I think it’s one of the best things I’ve done in my career. I knew when to move and when there was something to change. It was the case in Europe, it was the case in Japan, it was the case when I was on RAW and SmackDown.
“I’m sure I’ll get to a point where NXT has kind of run its course and it’s time to make a change, but I don’t see that coming anytime soon.”
The former Bullet Club frontman made his first appearance for NXT in 2014, making him a member of WWE for 7 years now. Balor mentioned that he doesn’t consider himself a WWE veteran and is still trying to make a name for himself. He said these years on the main roster have taught him that he still has a lot more to prove to himself and the fans.
“I don’t feel like a vet in any way,” Balor said. “I know I’ve been around for a little while when it comes to business, but when it comes to WWE, I feel like a green guy, I’m a rookie, I’m like a promising guy. I feel like I have a lot to prove and I have to prove it every night against all the talents in the ring. I proved it against Roman, I proved it against Seth, I proved it against Lashley, I want to prove it against Cole, I want to prove it against Gargano and I want to prove it against all talent.
“Whether it’s on RAW, SmackDown or NXT, I thrive on this challenge. I want to push myself to the limits now while I can. I’m sure in a few years, at the rate I’m progressing, we’ll have to slow down a bit. If I can get so many of these games under my belt now, learn from it, grow from it, that’s what I want to do.
Balor mentioned what he’s learned since being called back to NXT and how his confidence has grown. He said he never felt like a main wrestler while he was there, but now his self-confidence is very high and he feels he can be in the ring with anyone in the world.
“I think I’m a lot more centered,” Balor said. “Maybe in the past I wouldn’t have the confidence or even realize what level I was at. In the past, I always thought I was the guy on RAW or SmackDown who left the backdoor open and slipped in.
“I wasn’t really supposed to be there even though I was in the main events with Roman, Braun, all those guys. I didn’t really feel like I belonged and I feel like now in the ring I know I belong. I know I belong to WWE and I know I belong to any ring in the world, whether it be here in the United States or overseas.
