Fiona Apple is nominated for three Grammys this year, but the singer-songwriter said in a video message on Sunday morning that she would have music’s biggest night.
“I don’t want to be on national television,” she said in a video posted to filmmaker Zelda Hallman’s Instagram. “I’m not cut out for this stuff anymore.”
Apple won a Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance in 1998 for her song “Criminal”. In 2020, she released her first album in eight years, Collect the bolt cutters. In Sunday’s top prizes, he won the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album as well as Best Rock Performance for his track “Shameika”.
While she wished the other nominees and ceremony attendees the best, Apple said she just didn’t want to go herself.
“I want to stay sober and I can’t do it,” she said. “It doesn’t feel safe to me to be in this kind of exhibition or review, compared to people.”
She added that skipping the ceremony was not a protest on her part, although she acknowledged the issues she was having with the Grammys. The awards have increasingly drawn criticism from musicians, most recently The Weeknd, who said he would boycott due to a lack of transparency.
Instead, Apple called on fans to support transparency in U.S. courtrooms. She asked supporters in particular to sign a petition to keep virtual access for court watchers in Prince George County, Maryland.
“They are trying to exclude us and you have to question it,” she said. “Like, why are you trying to shut us out? What don’t you want us to see?”
A big problem has been the unaffordable bail, or in some cases no bail, which keeps those suspected of non-violent crimes in jail pending trial, she added.
“It’s ruining families and kissing the future that we have to help protect,” she said.
