Despite Kesha’s high-profile claims that Dr Luke sexually and emotionally abused her, many performers continued to collaborate with the pop hitmaker. As much as the Swifties terrify me, I respect their power to do good for her! I was so terrified that I was going to be nominated for Album of the Year with Taylor Swift, I was so relieved because I didn’t want to be bullied!
“Plus, I bring up the Grammys and it’s really something I shouldn’t be doing, but really, is Dr. Luke nominated?” she continued. “They had [Kesha] up there singing ‘Pray’ and now they’re going to say, ‘Oh but it’s Tyson Trax!’ Apple also spoke of Deborah Dugan, the first woman president of the Grammys, who sued the Academy for sexual harassment and gender discrimination after being ousted a few months after taking office: know more about what Deborah Dugan has to say because everything stinks of me. When you hire someone and they raise questions and then get fired? She brought up a lot of things that make me just can’t control this situation and don’t really want to go out there and support her.
Apple was nominated for Best Alternative Album, and its Collect the bolt cutters the song “Shameika” is in the running for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance, a category that is made up entirely of female artists this year. “I got this feeling right away: I wish I was in a room with these ladies and we could celebrate,” Apple said. “I felt really good for a second. I thought, for this week’s selfie, I’m going to make a T-shirt with everyone’s names in little hearts: Phoebe [Bridgers], Brittany [Howard], Danielle, Este, Alana [Haim], Adrienne [Lenker, Big Thief], Grace [Potter]. But then I threw it away. I felt like this was exactly what they wanted me to do: it’s better now! I was nominated! And they’re all women this year and the Grammys are awesome!
“I keep coming back to them putting Kesha on stage like, ‘We believe you’ – and I believe her – and then two years later fucking Tyson Trax,” Apple concluded. “Don’t go back on that word, but it’s bullshit. The feeling of wanting to celebrate with these women was genuine. But I should have that feeling anyway. I’m not sure if someone who is nominated can help think about what would I do if I won? My vision was that I would go right up there with a hammer and say nothing, take the Grammy and smash it into enough pieces to share and invite all the ladies up. My second thought was I wonder if I can get all these women to boycott this shit because of Dr. Luke.
