NASHVILLE, Tennessee – A loaded gun was discovered by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at Nashville International Airport (BNA) this morning.

At approximately 0930, a 9 mm Taurus handgun was detected in the passenger's hand baggage. The TSA alerted the airport police, who then took possession of the bag and escorted the passenger out of the checkpoint.

Firearms may be carried in checked baggage – provided that the airline is informed and the firearm is in an adequate and unloaded carrying case – but they are prohibited in the baggage of cabin.

The TSA reminds passengers that it is important that they search their luggage before traveling to the airport.

"Passengers are responsible for the contents of the baggage they bring to the checkpoint," said Mark Howell, TSA Regional Spokesperson. "Our advice is to look carefully at the bags before coming to the airport to make sure that they are not illegal or prohibited items."

This is the 33rd firearm detected by TSA officers at the BNA checkpoints until now in 2019. 86 firearms were detected last year.

In addition to potential criminal prosecution, passengers who bring a firearm to a checkpoint incur civil penalties from the TSA. More information can be found
