Andrew Williams, a firefighter-paramedic with the Sanford Fire Department, appeared in federal court on Tuesday and was released on $ 25,000 bail, court documents show.
The Sanford Fire Department has opened an investigation into Williams’ involvement after the photo was released online. Fire Chief Craig Radzak has confirmed it was Williams in the photo and said Williams had worked in the service as a paramedic firefighter since October 2016.
As one of the conditions of bail, Williams must appear at all legal proceedings. In addition, he is not allowed to possess firearms, ammunition or dangerous weapons and must return his passport by Friday.
Florida Federal Court records show Williams’ case being transferred to the District of Columbia.
He is permitted to travel to Washington if necessary for court appearances, subject to conditions.
“The Capitol president and police have encouraged contemptible behavior,” Citro said, speaking in court. “Mr. Williams was not involved in any of this. In fact, you will notice in the complaint that there is no allegation that Mr. Williams did any of these things.”
The Sanford Fire Department has suspended its investigation pending the conclusion of the federal investigation, according to its statement.
“We keep the men and women of this department to the highest standards,” Chief Radzak said in the statement. “It saddens me that the actions of one individual have tarnished the hard work and dedication that the rest of the department puts forward on a daily basis.”
