Firefighter came to the rescue on a day off to save man from bee swarm

He called 911, as anyone would if they returned to a car full of bugs.

Luckily for him, the firefighter who responded was also a beekeeper.

The man’s car was overrun by the bee swarm after leaving his window down at the Albertson grocery store in Las Cruces on Sunday, firefighters said on Facebook.

“The firefighters learned that the owner of the car had returned from shopping, placed provisions in his vehicle and began to leave before noticing the swarm in the back seat,” the post said.

Luckily, one of their firefighters, Jesse Johnson, is a beekeeper in his spare time, and was called in to come to the rescue on his day off.

Johnson was able to bring the appropriate equipment to care for the bees. It took over two hours for the bees to be removed.

The Las Cruces Fire Department estimates that more than 15,000 bees were in the swarm.

The crew estimated there were more than 15,000 bees, which were transferred to Johnson’s property outside of the city limits.

The ministry said it usually doesn’t deal with bees, but needs to act quickly for everyone’s safety.

“A security guard at Albertson was stung and it is possible that a few customers had close encounters, but no major injuries were reported,” the department said.
