A structure fire near Highway 101 sent black smoke over Redwood City and forced the closure of busy Whipple Avenue and the busy Veterans Boulevard on Sunday afternoon before it was cleared, officials said.

On Instagram, the Redwood City Fire Department described it as a two-alarm structure fire at the intersection of Whipple and Veterans, which is a busy intersection just off Highway 101. The service published a photo of the large cloud of black smoke aloft. .

People should avoid the area and find alternative routes, firefighters and police said.

Firefighters provided no further details on Sunday afternoon. Local television reports indicated that a tire store was on fire.
