NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – Authorities responded to a fire in a mosque in New Haven.

Officials from the New Haven Fire Department announced that the fire was declared Sunday afternoon at the Middletown Avenue Mosque.

Firefighters told WTNH-TV that a person was inside the Diyanet mosque when flames erupted near the entrance. We did not know right away when there were injuries.

The TV channel reports that worshipers had been raising funds for years to build the mosque and the construction was not complete.

The pictures of the scene showed flames gushing over a door and black smoke. Fire officials said the fire was on the first floor and was on the second floor.

The cause of the fire was not immediately obvious. Fire officials said the state police would investigate to determine if it was a suspicious act.
