Firefox 66.0.4 with the release of the additional signature fix

Mozilla plans to release Firefox 66.0.4 soon on the stable web browser channel. the new version fixes the problem of disabling and signing the add-on in the browser.

Firefox users with installed add-ons encountered a frustrating and strange problem on May 4, 2019: Firefox would not load any add-ons and would inform users that installed add-ons could not be enabled because they could not be checked by the browser.

The problem was all browser extensions, regardless of their rank or news. Even the Mozilla add-ons for Firefox have been affected.

The deactivation occurred just a day after Mozilla revealed that it would more actively attack expansion rule violations. Some users have assumed that this was the reason why extensions were disabled. Proved, it was not.

The problem was due to an expired certificate. Firefox could no longer check the extensions because of the expiration, and the browser then only used to disable all unverifiable extensions.

The problem was that the problem did not affect just one or two extensions whose certificates had been spoiled, but that it was touching them all.

Mozilla started distributing a patch to certain strings in Firefox, Firefox Stable, Beta, and Nightly, but this required that users have enabled Shield Studies. Not everyone wanted this because of the implications for privacy.

Others have distributed the Mozilla fix to third party sites so that everyone can install and fix the problem.

Firefox 66.0.4

Mozilla started working on Firefox 66.0.4 and updates for other versions of Firefox at the same time. The new version is already on the server, but it has not been distributed yet.

In general, I do not link to these versions because Mozilla can extract another final candidate, but I make an exception for the first time because the problem has not been solved for some users yet.

Go to http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/66.0.4/ and download the update to your system.

Release notes include only one entry: "Certificate chain repaired to re-enable disabled Web extensions"

The update should solve the problem for stable channel users and Android users who also benefit from the update.

Note: Firefox may display a message that one or more add-ons have been disabled. This occurs if the interim fix has been installed in the browser.

Only the hotfix-update-xpi-intermediate extension should be listed under unsupported. All other extensions must be listed under Extensions.

The hotfix extension is no longer needed because the problem is resolved in the updated version of Firefox.
