Mozilla Firefox users discover that all their addons have been suddenly disabled. It happens to be due to an expired intermediate certificate used to sign Mozilla addons.
In many reports on Reddit, Twitter and bug reports on bugzilla, users reported that their Mozilla addons were suddenly disabled with a message stating that they "could be checked for use in Firefox".
If they are trying to reinstall the addons from the Firefox add-on site, an error saying "Failed to download. Please check your connection".
From my tests, I was able to install some addons, but not the others. This may be because addons have been signed by another certificate that has not expired.
According to a bugzilla bug report, an intermediate signing certificate used to sign the Mozilla addons expired on 04/05/19 at midnight UTC. As the Mozilla addons must be signed in order to be used in Firefox, once a computer has reached this time, the browser has automatically disabled them.
The last message in this bug report comes from Kevin Brosnan, Senior Quality Assurance Engineer at Mozilla, who said he knows about the problem and is looking for it.
Make your addons work again
If the addons are not so important to you, you can just wait for Mozilla to solve the problem and your addons will work again.
For those who do not want to wait and want to activate their installed extensions immediately, you have some options:
Method 1: Put your clock back a few days
The simplest method is to turn on your clock a few days so that the certificate does not expire.
It will work, but it will also mean that any site you access with an expired certificate today will also work. Your emails from a local email client will have a bad date and some sites may indicate one.
Method 2: Install the Firefox Nightly or Developer Versions
Another option is to install the Developer or Nightly version of Firefox, which allows you to disable the signature required for extensions.
To do this, from the Developer or Nightly versions, you can go to about: config and search xpinstall.signatures.required. Once you have made the adjustment, you must set the setting to false by double clicking on it.
Once this setting is set to false, you should be able to use your disabled addons again.
Method 3: Enable addon debugging
One reader suggested the option to enable debug mode and install extensions locally from their XPI file.
