Apple today opened a new retail store in the Bronx at the Bay Plaza Mall. This is the first time that Apple has a store in the Bronx neighborhood of New York. The new store features an updated design with several new elements never seen before in other stores. The new features range from a brand new area dedicated specifically to in-store pickup, to the new Today at Apple tables.
Apple has already opened stores in the other four boroughs of New York: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. The new store is a significant store that will now serve a community often overlooked by large luxury retailers. Not only is the Bronx finally gaining its own Apple Store, it also wins the first one with an all-new design.
In-store pickup has become more and more popular due to the pandemic and I would bet the new store design is an answer to that. Along the back wall of the store there are drawers that hold customer orders. In front of the new drawers, a dedicated withdrawal table with several accessories to look at while waiting for a specialist to collect your order.
Apple also introduced a new table design for Today at Apple sessions in the new Bronx store. Instead of a theater-like setup, Apple opted for a community table that people can sit around. And of course, since this is an Apple table, there are built-in wall outlets for customers to charge their devices in store.
An unusual feature of the store is a dedicated waiting area. Apple stores inside malls rarely have extra seating, but the new Bronx store does. Along the walls between the avenues there are leather benches on which you can sit comfortably. This addition will certainly be important for accessibility and older customers.
The store also offers a refined set of materials that are still very Apple but clearly new. 9to5Mac alum, Michael Steeber, worked with designer Filip Chudzinski to create a virtual tour of the new store.
