One patient died after developing a serious respiratory illness due to vaping, according to health officials, in what could be the first such death in the United States.

The state health agency of the US state of Illinois said the unnamed patient was between 17 and 38 years old.

This occurs in the midst of an outbreak of disease in the United States that officials have linked to the use of electronic cigarettes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Wednesday that 149 people in the country had fallen ill because of their vaping.

"The seriousness of the disease that people are living is alarming and we must make it known that the use of electronic cigarettes and vaping can be dangerous," said Dr. Ngozi Ezike, director of the public health department of the 39, Illinois, in a statement announcing the death of the patient.

He added that officials from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) arrived Tuesday in Illinois to help investigate the death, as well as 22 cases of pulmonary diseases related to vaping in that state. .

The CDC, which follows a "group" of 149 cases across the country, says that it is not clear if the diseases are related, but that they do not appear to come from any other country in the world. an infectious disease.

"In many cases, patients have recognized the recent use of a product containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)," said the CDC, referring to the active compound found in cannabis.

According to the Associated Press Press Agency, the death in Illinois is the first of a vaping-related disease in the United States.

At least two other people died in the United States after the explosion of their electronic cigarette.
