First drive-thru COVID-19 vaccine opens in Houston

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – Amid a milestone in the city’s COVID-19 vaccination efforts, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner on Monday offered a grim toll and a reminder of the urgent need for extend vaccines to high-risk residents.

The 3,039 new cases reported by Turner are the most recorded in a single day in the city throughout the pandemic.

However, the statistics are subject to certain conditions. According to Turner, the number comes from an adjustment of cases from the past three days.

Still, the city has so far counted more than 148,500 coronavirus cases. Houston’s positivity rate is 17%.

City’s first driving vaccination site

With a digital reminder of the impact of the virus on the city, Turner and other city leaders inaugurated Houston’s first drive-thru vaccination site at Del Mar Stadium, where 1,600 doses of the Moderna vaccine have been allocated.

Turner added that the Houston health department received an additional 9,000 doses as of Friday.

“Our work to vaccinate as many people as possible (is) supply driven. I know there is a lot of anxiety in the community because people are worried that they will not be able to get a scheduled date. We know the demand is higher than the supply of vaccine, ”Turner said.

The drive-thru site is in partnership with United Memorial Medical Center. Those considered in high risk phases 1A and 1B qualified for the appointment vaccinations.

“As we receive more vaccines, we will expand our partnerships with federally qualified pharmacies and health centers to ensure the vaccine is available in the most vulnerable communities and will deploy mobile strike teams across the country. need, ”Turner added.
