FAYETTEVILLE – Florida State coach Mike Martin and Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn are leading all of the major active coaches at appearances at the College World Series.
Their next game at the Graal of University Baseball will be against each other.
The No. 5 Razorbacks will play the Seminoles Saturday at 6pm. at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb.
Martin, 75, participates in his 17th World Series at the College after an unlikely Seminole run through a regional in Georgia and a super regional at LSU. The Seminoles (41-21) have won their five playoff games, including two each over the top seeded Georgia and LSU.
Florida State has qualified for the world college series Sunday with a 5-4 win over LSU. Third baseman Drew Mendoza scored an RBI single at the end of the twelfth inning and won the regional super for the Seminoles.
Martin is the all-time leader in college baseball with 2,028, but is still looking for his first national championship in his final season before retiring. The Seminoles finished twice in Omaha, in 1986 and 1999.
The Van Horn Razorbacks saved Martin from participating in two other World College series tournaments. Arkansas beat the state of Florida in the super regional regions in 2004 in Fayetteville and in 2009 in Tallahassee, Florida.
Martin is 0-5 against Arkansas in his career, with all the upcoming games in the playoffs. In addition to the super-regional, the Razorback defeated the Florida State 7-6 at the South II Regional in 1985 in Tallahassee.
Van Horn is attending the eighth edition of the College World series, including his sixth trip to Arkansas. The Razorbacks, national finalists from Oregon State last season, are in Omaha for the first time in a row.
Arkansas and Florida State will join Texas Tech and Michigan on one side of the group in Omaha. The winner of the double elimination quadrant will play in the national championship series against Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, Louisville or Auburn.
Florida State kicked off Martin's final season with 12 straight wins, but the Seminoles were only 23-20 the rest of the regular season and, along with Michigan, participating in the College series, were among the last four teams admitted to the NCAA tournament. field.
The Seminoles dominated the field at the Athens regional competition. The FSU won 13-7 against Florida Atlantic, and 12-3 and 10-1 against Georgia, seeded number 4 of the tournament.
The Seminoles took the best of LSU 4-0 in the first game of the Baton Rouge Super Regional before scoring the final six points. Right-field player Reese Albert scored two home runs, including a three-run homer in the seventh inning. The FSU scored one point each in the eighth and ninth rounds.
In the second game, the United States led 4-1 after four innings, but allowed the Tigers to draw two points in the eighth. The Seminoles have worked on at least one LSU base runner for each extra run. They won when the Mendoza scorer scored the brief stop Mike Salvatore, who scored with a single withdrawal and qualified to score on a wild pitch.
