Netflix just announced I care a lot will be released on the streamer on February 19, and will also release the first writer-director trailer J Blakeson’s brutal new movie. I got to see the movie at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and it’s extremely well done and loaded with great performance. The film follows a very successful legal guardian (Rosamund Pike) and his partner (Eiza Gonzalez) who manage a number of elderly “clients” for personal financial gain. Their racketeering is to put the elderly person in an assisted living home and then polish them for all they are worth. When they try to go through their routine with a seemingly innocent new client (Dianne Wiest), they get much more than they bargained for. The film also plays Peter Dinklage, Chris Messina, Isiah Whitlock Jr., and Macon Blair. For more on the film, you can read Matt Goldberg’s review.

While some trailers give it all, what I love about the way this trailer is cut is that it absolutely sells you on the movie without letting you get into the various twists and turns. Plus, if you’re used to only seeing Rosamund Pike in serious roles, you can get a taste of her brilliant, mean performance.

Check it out below along with the official synopsis. Also, I spoke to Rosamund Pike and J Blakeson at TIFF so you can watch them talk I care a lot here.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Taking on a shark-like self-confidence, Oscar nominee Marla Grayson (Oscar nominee Rosamund Pike) is a professional court-appointed guardian for dozens of aged quarters whose assets she seizes and deftly defrauds them through questionable means but legal. It’s a well-oiled racquet that Marla and her partner and lover Fran (Eiza González) use with brutal efficiency on their latest ‘cherry’, Jennifer Peterson (two-time Oscar winner Dianne Wiest) – a wealthy retiree without heirs or family life. But when their brand turns out to have an equally wacky secret and ties to a volatile gangster (Golden Globe winner Peter Dinklage), Marla is forced to level up in a game only predators can play – a game that is neither fair nor square. .
