First Look at Macbeth’s Tragedy – / Film

Joel coen starts alone to change with Macbeth’s tragedy, a new adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play. A work of austere chiaroscuro and incantatory rage, Joel Coen’s daringly inventive visualization of The Scottish Play is an anguished film that gazes open-mouthed at a sorrowful world undone by blind greed and thoughtless ambition. In meticulously world-weary performances, a surprisingly inner Denzel Washington is the man who would be king, and an effortlessly Machiavellian Frances McDormand is his Lady, a couple driven to political assassination – and deranged with guilt – after the odds. cunning of a trio of “weird sisters” (a virtuoso physical dwelling of Kathryn Hunter). Shakespeare’s Macbeth has already been adapted to the screen several times. My favorite is Roman Polanski’s wicked and brutal take from 1971. More recently, Justin Kurzel did an adaptation with Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard. It was visually stunning, but there was something missing from the movie that I couldn’t quite put my finger on, and I wanted to love it more than I ultimately did.

While this is a story told many times before, the prospect of Joel Coen bringing this up with Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand is pretty darn exciting. Macbeth’s tragedy will be screened at Alice Tully Hall on September 24, 2021.
