First look at the Benson & Stabler reunion

After COVID-related delays, Mariska Hargitay has just teased what the highly anticipated Benson & Stabler reunion will look like on Law & Order: SVU.

Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler are back together in a new image of Law and Order: SVU. Almost a decade after the original Law and order came out of, SVU was released and arguably became even more popular than the original. Now over 500 episodes later, Law and Order: SVU continues with Stabler’s return to the series. Fans of the police procedure will finally get their long-awaited reunion after a series of delays mainly due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In March 2020, news broke that after almost a decade since Christopher Meloni left SVU, he should finally come back. The original plan was to see him in the Season 22 premiere, but due to filming difficulties due to the ongoing global pandemic, he was pushed back at some point into 2021. Part of the original cast of the series when he debuted in 1999, the actor abruptly left the Law and order spin off in the wake of season 12 after failing to renegotiate a new contract. Despite this, he has remained close friends with Mariska Hargitay, keeping viewers’ hopes that he will eventually come back alive.

Now it’s finally happening with Meloni back on the set of SVU with his co-star. Hargitay gave this update to fans after sharing a picture of herself and Meloni on set while filming. In the caption, she further increased the hype for their long-awaited on-screen reunion by writing: “Now even closer …”

The return of Meloni Law and Order: SVU is not permanent. After his first reunion with Benson and Finn, he’s set to direct his own spin-off, Law & Order: Organized crime. It’s safe to say that whatever happens in his first appearance will be tied to this new Dick Wolf offshoot, although no official premise has been released so far. It should be noted that part of the original plan to bring him back involved returning his family first in the Season 21 finale, but once again, due to the coronavirus pandemic, everything has been abandoned. The new show was supposed to be released in October, but its creatives struggled to decipher its backstory, forcing its showrunner, Matt Olmstead, to leave it altogether.

Since there is no context provided, it is difficult to assess what exactly is happening in this image; there’s even no indication where Hargitay and Meloni are turning as they appear to be in front of a generic background. What’s interesting here, however, is that Elliot is back in his typical detective costume. It is important to remember that when Law and order: SVU Scrambled to write him out of the series at the end of Season 12, he was said to be retiring prematurely. Since then, almost no mention has been made of him and his whereabouts. Now, however, it looks like he’s back on the pitch just like things were with him and Benson before he left.
