The Santa Fe XL will be discontinued after 2019. Before the Santa Fe XL, Hyundai had the seven-passenger Veracruz, which was abandoned after the 2012 model year.
The Palisade 2020 still uses Santa Fe foundations, sharing modules with the smaller crossover. But the number of changes, including a new chassis for the large SUV, is almost a new platform, says O & # 39; Brien.
It is powered by a 3.8-liter V-6 Atkinson engine delivering 291 hp at 6,000 rpm and 262 lb-ft of torque at 5,200 rpm. The engine is part of the Lambda family, but this iteration makes its debut on the palisade. The Atkinson cycle should improve the fuel economy of the naturally aspirated engine. The EPA city / road / combined fuel consumption figures are not yet available, but to meet or exceed the competition, Palisade needs at least 20/27/23 mpg with front wheel drive and 20/26/22 mid / gal with AWD. The optional all-wheel drive system features a torque vector to reduce understeer and the Palisade can tow 5,000 pounds. The hitch is standard and there are optional accessories.
Driving modes include comfort; smart for fuel economy; sport for aggressive driving; and a snow mode that initiates a second start for more traction for vehicles equipped with AWD.
The Palisade has a cascading grille that does not dominate the front, with lighthouses lower and more interesting. At the back is LED lighting. For an outdoor sensation, there is a panoramic rear window coupled to a sectional roof. It rolls on standard 18-inch wheels with optional 20-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, there is a 10.3-inch touch screen and a 12.3-inch TFT cluster for the driver, as well as a head-up display. Shift by wire frees up space for a floating console with more storage space. There is a wireless phone charging.
A second-row bench is standard for eight passengers, but customers can opt for captain's seats that reduce the seating capacity to seven. The second-row, reclining and ventilated power seats are designed to that children can retreat and move alone. The third row offers power tilting and folding seats. An intercom connects the front and third row seats. It can be put in conversation or in standby mode so that the driver can listen to music while the children sleep at the back. A ventilation fan on the roof provides better airflow to the rear occupants.
Hyundai SmartSense Standard offers a range of safety features, including collision warning and avoidance systems that can be used to control, brake and accelerate as needed. The Palisade also has a warning for the driver's attention and an alert if there is a child in the back seat. In addition to the warning sounds in the vehicle, it will send a warning to your phone if it detects a movement on the rear seats.
"Safe Exit Assist" is interesting. The radar that verifies the blind spot uses the knowledge that a vehicle passes to lock the door, thus preventing anyone trying to get out at that time. Hyundai officials are waiting for the palisade to obtain the best security ratings.
The palisade is assembled in Ulsan, Korea, but the most important market will be North America – the vehicle is too bulky for many markets.
Hyundai sees an opportunity in the mid-size SUV segment that is expected to reach 1.5 million annual sales in the US next year. It comes at the top of a range of SUVs that now has six entries: the new small Kona and Kona EV, the compact Tucson, the Santa Fe two-row, the Nexo fuel cell vehicle and the palisade. A new subcompact is also being prepared for publication next year.
The palisade will be on sale early in the summer of 2019. If prices remain consistent with those of the outgoing Santa Fe XL, expect the fence to start around $ 32,000.
