First Look at the YouTube Music Material You Widget [Gallery]

Android 12 brings renewed attention to widgets with Google Photos and Clock – this week only – serving as key examples. YouTube Music is working on a Material You widget, and we’ve enabled a preview of it.

About APK Insight: In this “APK Insight” article, we’ve decompiled the latest version of an app that Google downloaded from the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we can see different lines of code in this clue about possible future functionality. Keep in mind that Google may or may not offer these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be flawed. However, we will try to allow those that are about to be completed to show you what they will look like if shipped. With that in mind, read on.

Back at I / O, Google showed off a Material You video reel that highlighted what the redesigned apps and widgets could look like. There was clearly one for a music player that we now know to be for YouTube Music.

This next Material You YouTube Music widget is quite large at 3 × 3. It can be made larger, but not smaller. The circle, which displays the app logo when nothing is being read, is accompanied by two buttons. You have play / pause in the lower left corner, while a thumbs up for liking the current track is in front of that.

The latter is housed in a rounded square, while the other button is circular with Dynamic Color, theming them separately according to your wallpaper. It would also make sense to tint these controls according to the album art.

Tap anywhere else will likely open YouTube Music to Now Playing. These screenshots represent the extent of what we managed to activate today, so it’s not clear if the artwork will turn like in the design video or stay still.

In the meantime, there could be more changes ahead of launch. The biggest hurdle right now is the size and the fact that it takes up most of your home screen. It would be wise for YouTube Music to also modernize the current 4 × 1 widget, which today reaches 5 × 2 at most, to offer users something more conventional with Material You. A possible glimpse of this can be seen in this week’s Pixel 6 announcement.

Thanks to JEB Decompiler, which benefits some APK Insight teardowns.
