First look at Vietnam and its leader Lady Triệu in Civilization 6 • Eurogamer.net

Firaxis has released an in-depth video revealing Vietnam for Civilization 6.

Vietnam, which is part of the New Frontier Pass due out on January 28, is led by Bà Triệu, also known as Triệu Thị Trinh or Lady Triệu. Bà Triệu fought the occupation of northern Vietnam by the Wu Kingdom in the early 200s AD.

Vietnam’s unique ability is the Nine Dragon River Delta, which makes all Land Specialty Districts buildable only on rainforest, swamp, or woodland tiles. Buildings of each tile type receive either an additional Science, Production, or Culture. This ability also allows you to plant woods with medieval civic faires.

Bà Triệu’s unique ability is Hunt Aggressors, which provides additional combat strength to units fighting in the rainforest, swamps, or woods. This bonus is further increased for tiles belonging to Vietnam. If you start a turn in the rainforest, swamps, or woods, units get extra movement, which is also boosted for owned tiles.

Vietnam has a unique medieval-era ranged unit called Voi Chien, which can move after attacking. It’s more expensive than the crossbow unit it’s replacing, but it’s stronger on defense and has better eyesight.

And finally, Vietnam’s unique district is Thanh, which grants an additional culture to each adjacent district. Once the theft is sought, the neighborhood generates tourism equal to its cultural output. It does not require a population and costs less to build than the camp district it replaces.

Vietnam looks like a relatively flexible, field-driven civilization that can benefit from science or culture, depending on the location of districts. Firaxis suggests building buildings as quickly as possible to take advantage of their additional yields. Avoid the desert, but don’t be afraid to settle in open plains or grasslands, as Vietnam can plant woods early. However, rainforests cannot be planted, so think carefully before cutting them down.

Vietnam-owned woods, rainforest and swamp tiles offer civic significant tactical advantages, making Vietnam “a defensive powerhouse,” Firaxis said. But if you choose your battle strategically, these tiles also allow Vietnam to launch offensive crippling attacks.

Be careful, however, of forest fires and volcanoes – these can be particularly devastating for Vietnam.
