Fisk University in Top 10 HBCU Nationwide in U.S. News Rankings

Fisk University was named one of the 10 Best Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the 2022 US News and World Report Best Colleges Rankings.

The alma mater civil rights icons Comprising WEB Du Bois, US Representative John Lewis and Diane Nash, Fisk is one of Nashville’s oldest institutions of higher education.

Dedicated in 1866, then under the name of Fisk School, the university was also known as Fisk Free Colored School.

This year he joined the ranks of Spelman College, Howard University, Morehouse College and Tuskegee University among the the 10 best HBCUs.

These historically black colleges and universities were compared only against each other for these rankings. To be on the list, a school must be currently designated by the US Department of Education as HBCU.

To qualify for the US News Ranking, an HBCU must also be an undergraduate bachelor’s degree institution that primarily welcomes freshmen and must be a school in the 2022 ranking of top colleges, according to US News and World Report. .

Of the 78 HBCUs ranked, Fisk University is the only institution in Tennessee to drop from the top 20 list. Tennessee State University ranked 35th and LeMoyne-Owen College and Lane College ranked 59th-78th group.

Rankings are based on academic quality and metrics including graduate debt, peer HBCU administrator assessment, alumni donations, student excellence, and faculty and financial resources.

  • 17. University of Maryland Eastern Shore
  • 18. Clark Atlanta University and Jackson State University (tie)
