Five younger siblings have died after a fire broke out in their Illinois apartment while they were home alone, according to a report.
Fire crews met the children, ages 2 to 9, when they were called to an apartment building in East St. Louis at around 3:45 a.m. Friday.
Two of the children were found dead in a bedroom, East St. Louis Deputy Fire Chief George McClellan told Fox2.
The other three children were found on the kitchen floor.
One of the children found in the kitchen was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The fire started when the mother of the children was out to pick up another adult from work, McClellan said.
When she returned home, the mother tried to rescue her children but was unable to enter the building.
The mother and another adult were found outside the house by firefighters.
Authorities did not disclose the identity of the children or the mother.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
