As if there weren’t enough looters around, Outriders came out today. It’s a lot of play, with a lot of parameters that can affect the way you play. Some are obvious; some are not. It goes without saying that such things are a matter of taste, but I have found the following tweaks to make my time on Enoch more enjoyable.
Minimal scarcity of auto loot
Like all loot based games, Outriders has a color-coded gear classification system:
- White (common)
- Green (unusual)
- Blue (rare)
- Purple (epic)
- Orange (legendary
Outriders includes an attenuation system for FOMO gear. You can set it up in such a way that when you quickly travel to a new location at the end of the stages, you round up all the missed equipment of a certain quality. If you want to pick it all up, set it to common. If it clutters your inventory, increase it a few notches.
Maximum world level set automatically
Difficulty in Outriders is dictated by the so-called “world levels”, a leveling system that complements your character’s progression. World level 1 corresponds to the “story” difficulty, 3 corresponds to “normal”, 5 corresponds to “expert”, all up to 15 (“madness”). If you play, for example, at world level 4, you must earn enough experience points to reach level 5; you will need to earn enough at level 5 to reach level 6; etc. Each new level makes enemies more difficult, but also allows you to gain and equip better equipment.

You can configure the game to automatically place you on the highest unlocked level, but I prefer to leave it disabled. It’s best to have manual control over variables like “how badly the balls hurt” and “how often you get things shiny”.
Enable cross play
the Outriders The demo offered cross play between PlayStation, Xbox, and PC in a beta state, but you had to activate it manually. In the full game, crossplay is enabled by default. If you prefer to only play with people on the same platform, be sure to turn this option off manually.
When the game’s cross play is working, it’s an explosion, but during the demo I experienced more frequent disconnections when playing with a team spread across three platforms than when playing with just one other PS5 player. I haven’t had a chance to test the crossplay in its entirety yet, but developer People Can Fly said there are currently problems with the PC-console parts.
Cinematic camera smoothing
One of the main complaints lodged with Outriders cinematic-focused demo. They were too shaking, players said, recalling an action movie filmed with portable cameras. People can fly recognized the problem, and said a fix was planned for launch.
Now in the full game you have recourse. If you increase the smoothness of the cinematic camera, you can stabilize the camera. On PlayStation 5, I’ve found setting it to 0.50 to do the trick, but be sure to play around with the settings until you figure out what works for you. Or – and this is intended specifically for fans of Bourne trilogy director Paul Greengrass – turn it off completely.
