Five points to remember from Chiefs' Ford, Houston and Berry

The week has been tough in some respects for Chiefs fans across the country. They were forced to say goodbye to key members of the team last year, but also stars of the last generation.

The Chiefs released Justin Houston on Sunday, traded Dee Ford on Tuesday and bid farewell to Eric Berry, their beloved on Wednesday. The leaders snatched the bandage and performed a complete reset of the defense under new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

The movements tell us a lot about the realities of this off season and what it means for next season and beyond. Here are my takeaways after the major movements:

1. This is Patrick Mahomes& # 39; Team

The exit of the main leaders in the locker room like Houston and Berry means that it is undeniably the title team of the MVP (as if it were already already to a certain extent). There is no old voice established with the credibility that Berry or Houston had in this locker room. There are veterans like Travis Kelce and Chris Jones, yes, but the prevailing voice is Mahomes. And that's how it should be. He has earned the opportunity to be the guy in the building. The exit of veterans facilitates this transition.

2. They need to sign to pass the emergency help

Whether indoors or at EDGE, leaders need to find one or two players to help offset the loss of bag and pressure production. They are not going to lead the league this year, but if they manage to get in the middle of the pack, they should be better in other areas to catch up. The players under contract in 2019 have 26 bags: Chris Jones (15.5), Tyrann Mathieu (3), Xavier Williams (2.5), Breeland Speaks (1.5), Jordan Lucas (1), Armani Watts (1 ), Damien Wilson 1) and Reggie Ragland (0.5). If these players have a similar production or improve, it's a start. Finding help independently (maybe Markus Golden) helps them get closer to the middle of the pack for the league, which has 39 team bags.

3. Spagnuolo and his company have a lot on their plate

The new defensive staff is an exciting group. Spagnuolo has gathered quality spirits to help him solve his defense problems. The defensive line coach, Brendan Daly, comes from New England after helping to develop a plan of action that has slowed Mahomes and his company to Arrowhead. It was brilliantly done without too many players to impact them. This experience is now about good players, which should help leaders do more with less rush. Matt House was a defensive defense coordinator candidate for chiefs and is now in the building as a linebacker coach. His familiarity with university sport should help Spagnuolo adapt to the ever-changing landscape of NFL offenses. Spagnuolo's holiday should be useful to him because he is stimulated by new ideas and a spirit of quality. They have the group to solve these problems, but it will not be easy.

4. The leaders are not 29 years old

There is a clearly defined need to add an impact sensor in the next project. With the choice of an additional second round in 2020 and Marcus Peters' 2019 second-round pick choice, the Chiefs have enough ammunition to move around and catch an available sniper. A name to watch is Clelin Ferrell of Clemson. He has not done any sport trials at the NFL Combine and does not intend to do so during his professional day. Some anticipate that it could fall without participating. Chiefs could be the beneficiaries. He has a first round for us.

5. The leaders must nail this project

Last year, we felt like an overcorrection of hardness that the Chiefs felt was lacking in their loss to the Titans in the playoffs. The Chiefs went for blue-collar players working with Speaks and Derrick Nnadi. They need more impact from this project than last year. They are well equipped for the extra assets, but they have to make them count. You can expect them to hit the defense early and often. They especially need help with EDGE and the corner half.
