Five star running back Camar Wheaton made it official with Crimson Tide and signed on the dotted line Wednesday morning, becoming the 26th UA class signatory. Garland (Texas) product Lakeview Centennial committed in Alabama over Oklahoma shortly after the early signing period ended, meaning their engagement could not be formalized until National Signing Day .
Much speculation has remained with the Sooners continuing to communicate with the five-star running back throughout January, as well as the coaching reshuffle that saw the former Tide assistant. Jeff Banks – Wheaton’s first head recruiter at Capstone – Head to Texas and former running back coach Charles huff Head over to Marshall. But through it all, Wheaton has stayed true to his commitment and remained a member of the Tide class.
Credit the new running back coach Robert gillespie step into the role of keeper and hang on to Wheaton at the end.
Heading into the 2021 season, Alabama will have no shortage of options for running back. The Tide dismissed half a dozen bullet carriers, including Brian robinson, Trey sanders, Jase mcclellan, Keilan Robinson, Roydell Williams, and Kyle edwards. Wheaton will join the group and will certainly raise the level of competition day after day.
At 5-foot-10 and 190 pounds, Wheaton is ranked second in the running back and 33rd overall player in the country, according to the 247Sports industry-generated composite rankings.
Over the year, Wheaton rushed for 603 yards and eight touchdowns in just six games.
Here’s what 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong said about the pickup:
“Alabama have the highest offensive line class in the country. Maybe the best receiver too. Now they have one of the most exciting running backs in the country. Camar Wheaton, certainly one of the fastest prospects in the country at his post. One day burst and Wheaton is a threat to score, but he’s more than just a sprinter for six, he can speed up through cuts and explode away from defenders into the open field. That certainly translates into the second leg where he can light up the scoreboard as well. There isn’t a ton of physics in Wheaton’s movie but the vision, the feet to fail defenders, and the unique ability to find his top speed quickly make him a dangerous player. “
With the signing, the Tide got the highest-rated class ever, no matter what happens on national signing day.
