Rankin was a selection of the first SEC team in 2017 and was considered by many as a potential second-round pick just a year ago, making it an interesting recovery for Kansas City.
Elsewhere on the offensive line, Veach also spoke a bit about tackle Ryan Hunter, who made the initial lineup of 53 players after spending last season on the Chiefs' training team.
"He's really strong and he can play center and guard," Veach said. "I think his development last year as a member of the training team and that he is now part of the active team was a pleasant surprise. "
On the trade side, Kansas City also entered into an agreement with the Minnesota Vikings to purchase a future draft pick in exchange for rookie cornerback Mark Fields.
2. On the other side of the ball, Veach spoke about the current depth of the Chiefs at the cornerback.
As a result of his travels on Saturday, Kansas City has four half-corners in the lineup at Bashaud Breeland, Kendall Fuller, Charvarius Ward and Rashad Fenton. A fifth corner – veteran Morris Claiborne – will join the Chiefs in the fifth week after a suspension.
Veach was asked a few times if the leaders were considering adding staff to the position group. Without excluding anything, he suggested that Kansas City already had depth at this point on the list.
"I think that while we are certainly looking to add depth to the angles, one of the topics we talked about here was not to neglect the depth and versatility that we have in terms of security," said Veach. "[Tyrann Mathieu] could play nickel if he had to, [Juan] Thornhill can give you representatives at the corner, [Jordan] Lucas played a few corners and Fuller can give you depth both inside and out …[that’s valuable] while we continue to watch and observe the landscape of what will happen in the next 24 to 48 hours.
