Fletcher Magee from Wofford may well be the best shooter in the history of college basketball. Better than J.J. Redick. Better than Steph Curry. And now he has the place in the NCAA record books to prove it.
Magee had already passed the current NBA stars on various long-range fire lists. Thursday night, he overtook Travis Bader of Oakland to win the Division I title for the most assists in his career.
Magee drained numbers 503, 504 and 505 during his NCAA tournament debut. Then, in a battle against Seton Hall, 10th seed, he drained numbers 506, 507, 508 and 509 for good measure. His three goals – 7 out of 12 in total – propelled Wofford to his very first tournament victory.

The No. 503 was a classic Magee, shoulders well beyond the bow, well beyond the bow:
The triple record was a four-point game on a screen, with two defenders under his grid, again several feet behind the line:
The record opened the second half and extended Wofford's lead to 13:
Seton Hall, behind the 27 points of Myles Powell, came back in the game and took a two-point lead. But then Magee was hot:
Behind Magee's 24 points and Nathan Hoover's 18, Wofford pulled away for a win of 84-68. What's next? Kentucky.
Magee's 3 point record is as incredible as it sounds
Magee not only has the record. Just about every statistical measure, he is a better shooter than the other big ones immediately below him on the list.
Magee has the best success rate – nearly 44% – of more than 1.5 percentage points. He broke Bader's record in 96 fewer attempts. He beats Redick – third on the list – by three percentage points and 48 marks. He played fewer games than both.
Earlier this season, Magee broke the Southern Curry conference record. Of course, the former Davidson superstar, now part of the Golden State Warriors, has completed 414 trios in three seasons. If he had stayed a quarter, he would almost certainly be at the top of the list.
But he did not do it. Magee, at best a marginal prospect of the NBA, did it. He eventually led Wofford to the tournament on his fourth and final attempt. And after Thursday night, America is now known by its name.

His shot selection is questionable. Its shape is unconventional. If he did not send a basketball spinning through a net more than 43% of the time, he would be called ugly. Magee would be labeled a shooter.
But that's the case. It's a gunner, but in the best of ways. And now he's holding an NCAA record.
