In response to the Apple Watch Series 7’s new QuickPath keyboard, the developer of the seemingly similar app FlickType tweeted that it plans to take the new feature to court, if its current lawsuit were to be tried.
FlickType developer Kosta Eleftheriou recently ditched the iPhone version of their app, citing issues with the App Store. Now that Apple has unveiled an on-screen keyboard for the Apple Watch similar to FlickType, Eleftheriou has taken to Twitter to object.
This is the original rejection letter Eleftheriou received, and it is not confirmed whether the focus is on him or on Apple. Either way, the sideline regarding how the app was dismissed specifically because it’s a keyboard for the Apple Watch.
In addition to tweeting “See you in court” after the “California Streaming” event, Eleftheriou has already filed a complaint that covers this issue. Filed in March 2021, it claims that Apple is abusing its market power.
“Apple’s promise to help developers create, test, market and distribute their products and grow their businesses through a secure, reliable and accessible marketplace is just a facade designed to falsely attract developers to the market. ‘App Store,’ says the lawsuit.
Eleftheriou’s FlickType was released on iPhone in 2018, followed by an Apple Watch version.
Apple said Appleinsider that the letter posted in the Twitter feed dates from 2019, when such keyboards were not allowed on the Apple Watch. The company initially allowed the app to return due to its accessibility feature and separately removed the constraint.
Therefore, according to Apple, there are now several keyboard extension apps for Apple Watch on the App Store. And Apple featured FlickType in its list of the best apps of 2020.
Then, following the problems that prompted Eleftheriou to sue, Apple says it has been in contact with the developer. Based on the information it provided, Apple expects the accessibility keyboard functions to meet App Store guidelines and would review a new version.
