Flights Icons All Tee Martin Amid Josh Heupel Rental

It’s no secret that Flight Nation had a mixed reaction when Tennessee football hired UCF Knights head coach Josh Heupel to lead their program. Since new athletic director Danny White was also from UCF, people were a little suspicious as well.

However, while most of these malcontents thought The Flights could have brought about a bigger name, a few legends took the time to brag about one of the assistants still on duty. Receiver coach and passing game coordinator Tee Martin has been featured in more ways than one.

Peerless Price, the greatest wide receiver in Tennessee football history and Martin’s go-to player on the 1998 national championship team, said Martin was beyond his injuries. It remains to be seen why this is the case. Price made the statement on Twitter.

What was more telling than this tweet, however, was one of Price’s responses to another tweet. He started arguing with much of Theft Twitter, but in one of his replies he hinted that it wasn’t about Martin receiving the head coach job.

If this tweet is true, what does it all mean? Does that mean Heupel is about to fire Martin? If so, it contradicts a report released less than a week ago by Jimmy Hyams on Twitter that Martin had received an offer to stay.

Of course, Heupel might want his own guys. There’s a chance Kevin Steele, who was hired specifically to guide the program through this transition and nothing else, won’t stay on staff either, though given the defensive issues for Heupel’s teams. , it wouldn’t be a bad idea to keep it.

Either way, if Martin is injured and there is an implication that it isn’t about becoming a head coach, then either Heupel is parting ways with him or he doesn’t get any promotion to which he might have expected. Is there any chance Martin thinks he’s made the offensive coordinator? We have no way of knowing.

Another former Tennessee football player, however, was more blunt. Albert Haynesworth, an NFL Pro Bowl defensive tackle who played with the Flights from 1999 to 2001, directly accused the Flights of racism for failing to name Martin’s head coach on his Facebook page. Haynesworth called for a boycott of UT’s all former African-American program. Here is a bit of what he said.

“I bring running because UT has surpassed good, skilled black coaches like Kippy Brown and others in these latest coaching searches. The majority of your players are African American why not put an African American coach to lead them especially the one who won a championship in Tennessee? You’re giving everyone but a skilled black man a chance! Having said that, I will not attend any games or support until I see the change in the college I love so much!

Obviously, Haynesworth is making a serious accusation there, but it’s clear that the people who played with Martin during that time all loved and respected him. Maybe it was just in the heat of the moment, but maybe it had something to do with other potential African American candidates who also weren’t hired this time around.

Of the two, however, Price seems to be a more credible source on what Martin specifically wants. The two have been teammates for a longer time, and as we said, Price was Martin’s main target in 1998. It’s safe to say that they probably have a connection that few college teammates have.

Either way, it’s hard for Vol Nation to see. Everyone wants to see Tennessee football united in the future, and it just doesn’t seem to be right now. However, if Heupel is successful, that can change quickly.
