Residents of Flint worried about the water more than five years ago, often throwing jugs with discolored water at local leaders. In 2015, the Environmental Protection Agency said it found dangerous levels of lead – which can affect the heart, kidneys and nerves – in the flowing water in residents’ homes.

Dozens of lawsuits, including class actions, brought against Michigan and the city of Flint followed. Many cases focus on the youngest victims – children whose exposure to lead and toxins could lead to neurological and learning disabilities, among other things.
The Supreme Court said this year it would not block a lawsuit brought by residents of Flint seeking to hold city officials accountable. Lawyers in the city had asked the judges to intervene, saying their clients enjoyed immunity from such lawsuits. An earlier decision by a federal appeals court also sided with residents.
